Two stories that set the week's agenda

Son puts a number on the AI buildout at SoftBank World 2026

Published: 2026-07-14
  • SoftBank World 2026, the group's largest corporate event, opened July 14 with a keynote by Chairman and President Masayoshi Son.
  • His view: worldwide AI infrastructure investment reaches 5 trillion dollars — about 800 trillion yen — a year in 2040.
  • The demand behind it: 100 trillion AI agents and 1 billion humanoids in operation.

Why it matters

A specific, public forecast from one of Japan's largest AI investors becomes the benchmark other plans are measured against.

Powering it: natural gas now, nuclear fusion next

Published: 2026-07-14
  • For AI data centre power, Son named natural gas for the time being, with nuclear fusion promising as the generation source after that.
  • The staging is a statement about timelines: power, not chips, is the gate on the buildout.
  • SoftBank's AI cyber defence business has drawn interest from 137 companies.

Why it matters

Energy supply and the security layer are being commercialised alongside compute, not after it.

China's companion AI rules take effect tomorrow

Published: 2026-07-06  |  Carried as an exception: the rules take effect July 15
  • Interim Measures for AI Anthropomorphic Interaction Services, promulgated April 10 by five bodies including the Cyberspace Administration of China, take effect July 15.
  • Scope: AI companions that sustain an emotional relationship. Virtual lover and virtual family services for minors are prohibited.
  • ByteDance's Doubao and Alibaba's Qwen have notified users that agent features will be suspended.
  • Qwen permanently deletes agent settings and conversation history; Doubao keeps them read-only until October 15.

Why it matters

A legal line between agents that do work and agents that keep you company. Productivity bots are out of scope; personality-bearing services sold into China are not.

Wrap-up

Three things to remember

One

The buildout has a stated price

5 trillion dollars a year by 2040 — a public benchmark for sizing AI infrastructure, power and security opportunities.

Two

Power is the gating question

Natural gas for now, nuclear fusion next. Energy sequencing framed the keynote's answer on how the capacity gets served.

Three

Persona is now regulated

China separates working agents from companion agents, and vendors removed features ahead of the deadline rather than after it.

What to watch next

July 15 enforcement in China, the Gemini 3.5 Pro release on July 17, and the July 31 FTC comment deadline.
